 Application Process

Summary

In order to apply to the Kiva Fellows Program (KFP), applicants must submit an online application form and supplementary materials. Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a phone interview with a former Kiva Fellow. Selected applicants will then be required to submit paperwork documenting their flexibility in terms of region and time of placement. After completion of this piece of the application, they may be invited to a final interview with a member of the Kiva Fellows Program staff.

Successful applicants will find out the region in which they are likely to serve upon acceptance. Although an applicant may specify a desire to participate in a particular training class, a placement corresponding to that preference cannot be guaranteed. After offering acceptance into the program, Kiva reserves the right to determine the placement class with which each accepted applicant will serve. Flexibility is central to the Kiva Fellows application process and to the program as a whole.

 Dates and Deadlines

Please navigate to the KFP Calendar page for details on key dates and deadlines.

Table of Contents:

Application Policies

Due to the large volume of applicants, incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications sent in after the deadline will be included for the following round.

Step 1: Application

  • Complete applications must include:

    • An Online Application Form

    • A Resume or CV in pdf format

    • A Budget Summary in xls format

    • WordPress

    • Skype

  • Supplementary materials (Resume and Budget Summary) must be uploaded at the end of the online application

  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Step 2: Alumni Skype Interview

  • Once applications have been reviewed, qualified applicants are invited to participate in an interview with a former Kiva Fellow.

  • Alumni interviews are conducted as a Skype call and during a time slot that works for both the applicant and alumni interviewer.

  • Generally, the alumni interview will last between 45 and 60 minutes.

Step 3: Placement Agreement

  • After the first interview, applicants who make it to the next stage will complete a Placement Agreement in order to determine flexibility in terms of region and time of placement.

  • Kiva Locations details the specifics of where fellows may go. Not all locations have placements for all classes.

  • Kiva determines where to place accepted applicants by evaluating how well an applicant’s qualifications correspond to the available positions, the current needs of Kiva's field partners, an applicant’s skills in relation to other applicants, and his/her flexibility. Although Kiva welcomes regional preferences, we prioritize according to the previously stated considerations. Matching these factors with the needs of Kiva and the field partners is an intricate and, at times, lengthy process to determine a Kiva Fellow’s region and MFI placement.

Step 4: Final Interview

  • Selected applicants will be invited to a final interview with the a member of the Kiva Fellows Program staff, to be held over Skype.

  • Ideally, the final interview will last no more than 45 minutes.

Step 5: Acceptance

  • After review of the application, interview notes, Placement Agreement and availability within particular regions and MFIs, the KFP team will notify successful applicants of their acceptance into the program.

  • At the time of acceptance, applicants will be informed of the region in which they will most likely serve.

Step 6: Fellowship Agreement and Liability Waiver

  • Within seven days of notification of acceptance, accepted applicants must complete and submit a Fellowship Agreement and Liability Waiver to confirm participation in the Kiva Fellows Program.

  • At this point, accepted applicants will be given a Kiva email mask and be invited to our online collaboration tools.

Step 7: Placement

  • Successful applicants will be accepted into the program, but Kiva reserves the right to determine the placement class and region in which each future trainee will be placed.

  • As Kiva's field partners inform Kiva of their need for fellows, the Kiva Fellows Program begins to match its accepted fellows with the available slots in the field based on the future trainee's skills, experience, and availability.

  • The goal is to maximize benefit for the field partner, for Kiva, and for the Kiva Fellow.

Step 8: Training/ Departure

  • Trainees must attend the agreed-upon training session in its entirety and depart for the field within two weeks after training is complete. Training takes place over five days:

    • Day 1: How Kiva works, program overview, mission and core beliefs, life at a MFI

    • Day 2: Workplans and Skill-building (finance, spreadsheets, technology, customer service)

    • Day 3: Web tools used by Kiva Fellows

    • Day 4: Deliverables and success metrics

    • Day 5: Goals, communication and expectations
